My story starts long before I landed at SHATTUCK CREEK OUTFITTERS. 1979 Ohio, 7 1/2 yr old me, fresh off my hunter’s safety course. Anticipating the fall in the woods with my dad. Gun hunting for whitetail deer, all I ever dreamed of at the time. That experience would have to wait at least one more year. On a Saturday morning in October, I would take a hike in the woods out my backdoor bow in hand. And that would set off a chain of events that has been my lifelong passion, Bowhunting. Nothing has captured my attention throughout my 54 years, aside from my family. Like getting up close and personal with a big game animal.
I’ve spent all of my life since that day hunting big whitetails, across the Midwest and northern states like Wisconsin, Michigan and even into Canada for bear. Always dreaming of the day, I could walk the mountains of the west chasing elk. When I was younger, like many others I didn’t have the money or the time. Later on, I had the time and no money. And then money and no time. When I finally had both money and time, I then had three boys one of which Camden, who was becoming an accomplished bowhunter himself. Looking up to me saying ” I want to out west with you, don’t go without me”. Once again, my dream of chasing elk in the mountains of the west would have to wait. But time was ticking quietly away. Many years of research and studying western states elk heards and a trip out west to visit Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks. I knew after a drive through northern Idaho that I had to get this done. And soon!
Over a couple of years, I spoke to many outfitters and listened to every sales pitch you can imagine. But once I spoke to Amon Molsee, owner of Shattuck Creek Outfitters. I knew there was no need to make another call. Amon took time to listen to me, hear me in a way other outfitters did not. My son and I wanted an authentic elk hunt in the mountains of Idaho. On public land that would test our skills, our stamina and put the Elk on equal ground. i can attest that’s exactly we got! After a beautiful drive out west from central Ohio. And 7 days of very good fly-fishing., we landed at Shattuck Creek Outfitters. The Lodge was exactly as it was described. Comfortable, accommodating, meals ready each day. Hot showers and comfortable beds to sleep in. A great atmosphere in camp, lots of storytelling. Made some new friendships and felt welcome and right at home. Amon, his boys and the staff didn’t miss a thing, Jake, our guide, Spent the first night showing us around camp, allowing us time to sight our bows and setting expectations for the week to come. We even had time to get out that first night and look the country over. We spent 7 days in the mountains hiked more miles than I care to mention. Saw elk each day had a couple of opportunities early in the week that didn’t work out. Passed a few shots up. But never felt disappointed at the end of each day. Finally on day 7 I was able to close the deal on a young bull. Jake worked hard all week to give us the best chances each day for success. I remember thinking for a young guide he had a lot of knowledge to share with us. little did I know that our day wasn’t finished yet. After packing my bull out and getting it back to camp, I was basking in my accomplishment. A lifetime of waiting, dreaming and planning finally came to an amazing finale. But there was more to come. My son Camden seriously considered not hunting the evening of day 7. It had been a long week. But his gut told him get back out for the last few hours. You just Never know. Camden was able to connect on a real nice mature bull late in the day and the deal was done. 2 for 2! And like I have learned many time over, watching my son make his dream come true outshined anything I done that week. including keeping up with a couple young guys that set a pace that would be impressive to any hunter. A 750 lb. 6 X 6–Scoring 313 inches. I cannot say enough about Shattuck Creek Outfitters and Amon and his staff. Our guide Jake Thank You for a great week. A great experience.
